Bandwidth limits incurred by an audio signal due to low-excursion and narrow-bandwidth speakers reduces the perception of bass. A method to overcome this is to synthesize the harmonics of the fundamental frequency using side-chain processing. Depending on the input signal, intcrmodulation distortion could be introduced resulting in artifacts. A recent approach selects relevant portions of the low-frequency signal for reproduction using perceptually motivated filters, resulting in cleaner bass reproduction as confirmed through listening tests. However, one of the limitations is the need for large-duration frames or blocks (e.g., 5296 samples/block at 48 kHz) to obtain adequate frequency resolution at low-frequencies. In this paper, we present an alternative approach that scales well in performance with respect to smaller block-sizes using 1/6-octave filterbank and power analysis.
