An inertial energy storage system capable of storing up to 320 MJ of energy was successfully designed, built and tested. The system consisted of a charging motor drive, rotating energy storage generator, static exciter, solid-state controlled rectifier, and control system. The system uses fixed frequency ac power to energize a variable frequency motor drive/controller that spins a synchronous machine rotor to store kinetic energy. Charging time is on the order of 1 minute. The stored energy is then discharged through the synchronous machine stator windings and a solid state rectifier to produce a high power dc pulse at the output. The duration of the output pulses are on the order of seconds. Over 100 charge and discharge cycles were achieved during testing.
