As future Navy platforms will heavily depend on advanced power electronics, ensuring stability of the interconnected components becomes a major concern. One approach toward stability analysis of such systems is based on the impedances of the components. This paper reports on a successful project that for the first time deployed Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) simulation to determine the impedance characteristics of a megawatt-level medium voltage AC to DC converter. As the PHIL simulation enables early stage testing over a wide range of conditions, it becomes a major tool in derisking new power component developments, providing feedback on control designs, and supporting system integration.
