Based on technological developments, it is highly desirable to enable pulsed energy loads on existing Navy assets. Since direct implementation of these loads would unacceptably stress the generation and distribution systems on many current platforms, a buffering solution is needed.To address this challenge, DRS has built an 'Energy Storage Module' (ESM) that stores energy in Lithium-Ion batteries and discharges through a galvanically isolated converter at rates up to several hundred kilowatts. The ESM is capable of being recharged via a galvanically isolated converter from a standard three-phase input in under one hour. The ESM is assembled in a military grade cabinet and has been delivered for Navy testing to achieve Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6).Enhancements to the ESM are in process to provide improved performance and expand its range of applications. A breadboard is currently assembled at DRS and testing is underway including:1. Charge rates less than 10 minutes2. Ship-wide UPS applications, using bidirectional AC/DC conversion3. Continuous stochastic load applications, using buffered DC/DC conversion4. Various bus configurations, including isolated and non-isolated busses of 375 Vdc, 650Vdc, and lOOOVdc as well as 440Vac. High frequency isolation transformers are used in conjunction with power electronics to minimize the size and weight impacts of providing galvanic isolation.The Energy Storage Module offers a modular and adaptable solution to a wide variety of ship interface concerns with pulsed energy loads.
