Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls with Staggered Openings under Seismic Loads

Reinforced concrete shear walls play a significant role in seismic areas. It is important to have a ductile failure in the shear wall instead of brittle failure. Many experimental and theoretical tests have been conducted on shear walls without openings, but this project focused on the performance of shear wall with a different pattern of staggered openings under lateral loading. In this research paper, the failure analysis of reinforced concrete shear walls with vertically ordered openings and three walls with different openings angles is conducted under incrementing increasing lateral load using ABAQUS program. The final results of this project are compared to experimental results. Due to a limitation of the test setup, the models were reduced to a 1:4 scale, and the failure modes of a 4-story wall with 4 different opening angles were modeled.
