Experiments with the 704th Test Group demonstrating the effects of debris striking the internal structures of aircraft components were conducted at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH. In these experiments, high-speed images show the debris can cause a flash function when the two metallic objects collide followed by hot particles resultant from the flash function. In order to understand the implications of the recorded data, Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) was developed to investigate the images of the high-speed impact. The resulting research demonstrates the use of PTV to determine the direction and velocity of the flash particles sufficient to cause dry-bay fires commonly found in aircraft mishaps after debris strikes aircraft components. Additionally, this research investigates the ability for commercial image processing software to identify the size and duration of the flash function itself to determine its contribution to dry-bay fires.
