Fast Line Outage Detection Using PMU Measurements in Partially Observed Networks

A method for fast line outage detection and identification in partially observed PMU networks is presented. It is suitable for application to voltage stability analysis that uses the full network topology, and its chief advantage is that it detects outages using limited PMU measurements. It relies on applying measured system states to a pre-outaged network, and detecting an outage by observing nodal injection errors. It then defines a subnetwork surrounded by observed border buses and proceeds to carry out a search within the subnetwork to identify the outaged element. The method was tested on the IEEE39-bus through simulation and yields accurate identifications with times comparable to PMU assisted topology detection in fully observed networks.
