Blind Rendezvous: A Promising Candidate of Secure Spectrum Access for D2D communications in IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging technology that promises a more connected and smarter world. It enables many physical devices, living creature, or cyber-physical systems (all referred as “things”) the ability of wireless communication. The explosive deployment of IoT and CPS systems bring tremendous benefits to this era. However, it also carries unprecedented risks to our lives and society. In this paper, we first investigate the novel vulnerabilities of device-to-device (D2D) communications, which is essential in IoT, including spectrum invading, jamming, and eavesdropping. Then, we recommend the blind rendezvous as a promising technique for D2D’s secure spectrum access. Both the analytical study and performance evaluation validate that certain kind of blind rendezvous efforts can provide communication pairs a whole new experience on spectrum access in IoT, such as helping each other, invisible, and easy to hide from attackers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that comprehensively studies the qualification of blind rendezvous as the desired spectrum access candidate for IoT communications.
