Architectural Lighting Design emerged from and remains part of Illumination Engineering. With the emergence of electric light in the early 20th century as a replacement for daylight in the workplace, Illumination Engineering developed a set of best practices that related quantity of illumination - light incident on planes - to the visual discrimination associated with distinct tasks such as reading, drafting and sewing. The conventional engineered approach to the illumination of space is built around a rigid conception of program: an analysis of the intended tasks to be undertaken in the room and a target illuminance derived from optical and psychophysical research about the required amount of illumination to support the visual discrimination necessary to accurately and efficiently complete those tasks. With some refinements, this approach is primarily concerned with the quantity and uniform application of illumination on an abstract task surface that stretches across interior spaces.
