Residential Indoor Particulate Matter Monitoring: A Comparative Study of Two Low-Cost Sensor Technologies

Studies have shown that urban residents spend roughly 90% of time indoors, where particulate matter concentrations are often higher than outdoor concentrations due to numerous common indoor activities and sources, such as combustion from cooking, burning candles or incense, smoking, and household cleaning. Particulate matter (PM) has been linked to numerous respiratory and cardiovascular impacts, including aggravated asthma and decreased lung function. As many common indoor air pollutants, including fine PM, are typically not visible to the human eye, residents are often unaware of their local air quality. Low-cost sensors offer an opportunity to characterize indoor air emissions for specific behaviours in a variety of local environments and provide feedback on how they may affect home exposures.
