Analysis of Electrical Energy Flow in a Battery Powered Electric Vehicle, Comparing the Economical Mode and the Normal Mode under Real Conditions

Sustainable engineering goes, according to current state of knowledge, hand in hand with products causing significantly less CO2-emissions. In consequence, in modern times, the electrification of cars becomes more and more important. There are only a few data of battery powered electric vehicles (BEVs) under real conditions. On a test bench, the New European Driving Cycle is a commonly used standard, which, however, hardly simulate actual conditions and circumstances of real drive. In order to advance R&D of the electrification of the mobility sector, data from BEVs must be generated under real conditions and the data has to be carefully analyzed. In this paper, the authors compare the driving conditions of an electric car in two different driving modes under real conditions and quantify the difference between the energy flows when driving in these two modes. These modes are: I) normal mode (no velocity limitation) and II) Economical mode (velocity limitation at 94km/h). The modes are specified by the manufacturer of the test vehicle.
