This paper presents a Modified Instantaneous Reactive Power (MIRP) theory based algorithm for neutral clamped capacitor split Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) based Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (DSTATCOM) connected on the Distribution side. The Standard IRP theory fails to compensate the source current during the presence of distortion in the supply voltages. In MIRP theory with the distorted voltages the source currents are compensated. In this algorithm sequence voltages are extracted for the reference compensator currents generation. Current Controlled PWM technique is used for generation of switching gate pulses for the VSI. To balance the capacitor voltage at fixed voltage level, simple PI controller is used. The algorithm provides desirable load compensation for unbalance and non-linear loads during the distorted voltages and the validation of the proposed algorithm is done using simulation in MATLAB/SIMULINK.
