A 77 GHz FMCW Radar System for Versatile Consumer Applications

This paper introduces a novel 77 GHz 2 × 2 Frequency-Modulated-Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar system based on the front-end transceiver ADT1002 for versatile consumer applications, such as touchless human computer interaction (HCI) and non-contact vital sign detection (VSD). The theory and working principles are discussed. The system supports a maximum scanning bandwidth of 5 GHz and multiple scanning modes such as sawtooth modulation and triangle modulation. With the system operating at sawtooth modulation with a scanning bandwidth of 4 GHz, versatile consumer use cases were investigated, including thumb motion and palm swipe detection, respiration sensing, and approaching detection. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed 77 GHz FMCW radar system is suitable for versatile consumer applications.
