Energy storage systems (ESS) for wind farm can be used to ease the peaking burden of conventional units tracking with wind power through charging/discharging wind power, which makes it possible for the fluctuant wind power adapting deterministic scheduling. This paper proposes a method to optimize the capacity of a BESS for wind farms considering peaking demand, and also the economics of the BESS as well as its adaptability to the dispatching decision is taken into account. The constraints of peak power demand are given, and based on an optimal wind power output value adapting to the presupposed dispatching plan, a comprehensive cost-benefit model is built. In light of the actual wind power data, the effectiveness of the proposed optimization method is verified by use of simulations. The demonstrated results enable to provide a good reference for the capacity design of the BESS with the coordination of the power dispatching.
