Boring is a machining process to manufacture the hole. During the deep hole process, boring bar with a high aspect ratio is easy to chatter under various cutting conditions, and it causes poor surface roughness and dimensional error. This paper aims to develop a new magnetostrictive actuator to suppress the chatter vibration of a high aspect ratio boring bar as well as to detect the chatter vibration without an additional sensor. The magnetostrictive material, Terfenol-D, which is an alloy of the formula Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.92is used as both sensor and actuator. In addition, the design is analyzed by various experiments to demonstrate the magnetostrictive behavior in response to the DC and AC magnetic field. External chatter vibration frequency detection using inverse magnetostrictive effect have been studied. The experimental results show that the proposed magnetostrictive actuator is capable of suppression of the chatter vibration in the high aspect ratio boring bar and can be utilized for various machining applications in the future demands.
