Using Software Development Artifacts to Improve the Software Development Process

The process of creating and deploying a commercial software product generates many data artifacts. Examining these artifacts provides insight into development processes and customers’ experiences using production versions in the field. To improve our products, we must better understand the data we are collecting and extract useful information from it to answer questions and solve problems. This industry tutorial will cover two case studies involving data generated during the development of, and deployment of, a desktop statistical software package. The first case study focuses on retrieving and parsing data artifacts generated by a Jenkins task scheduling system. The second case study describes an automated process for detection and processing of software crash reports.
