Design and Construction of a Wave Splash Barrier for a Coastal Road of Route 231 at the Hamamasu District of Ishikari City

Wave overtopping often caused traffic hindrances on Route 231 on thecoast of the Hamamasu District, Ishikari City. To ensure safe traffic, awave splash barrier behind the wave-dissipating seawall was designed.The splash height of overtopping waves was measured and the necessarywave splash barrier height was designed. Wave force distribution on thewave splash barrier was also measured via hydraulic model tests. Stormwaves equivalent to the design waves hit the site on October 2015, butthe wave splash barrier was undamaged, indicating applicability of thedesign method to the site.
