Researches about the interaction between freak waves and coastalbreakwaters are rare. In this paper, the nonlinear freakwaves propagationover a submerged trapezoid breakwater on a flat seabed are investigatedboth experimentally and numerically, with emphasis on the effect ofthe breakwater on the hydrodynamic behavior of the breaking and nonbreakingfreakwaves. A series of experiments are carried out and usedto validate a numerical model based on a fully nonlinear Navier-Stokesequations. A spatio-temporal focusing model is employed for freakwavegeneration. The numerical results of freakwave evolution along theflume are compared with the measured data and good agreement isachieved, which indicates that the present numerical model is capableof accurately predicting the wave-structure interaction. Furthermore,the variation of the freak waves energy structure are conducted toinvestigate the influence of the breakwater. In the end, the variationof the whole velocity fields near the structure are given to analysis thehydrodynamic characteristics of freak waves during the propagationthrough the breakwater.
