Identification of Groundwater Potential Zones and Artificial Recharge Sites in Vedganga River Sub-Basin Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

The Vedganga River sub-basin covers an area of about 1413 sq. km in Kolhapur District of Maharashtra and Belagavi District of Karnataka State. In the present research an attempt is made to delineate the groundwater potential zones and artificial recharge sites in Vedganga River sub-basin, using integrated approach of remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS). Geologically, the study area is covered by three rock formations namely: Deccan volcanic basalt (DVB) (Upper Cretaceous to Lower Eocene), laterite occurs in the top of the hill (Pleistocene), and small patches of quartzite (Kaladgi formation). For present study we adapted remote sensing and GIS techniques and found that in association with fieldwork these techniques provide very accurate results in very short time span for delineating the groundwater potential zones. It is also useful to find the new artificial recharge sites for increase in the groundwater yield and recharge.
