A carbon steel device shaped like a cylindrical cup attached to a pipe containing hydrogen gas was tested and modeled to investigate the effect of cup material on the hydrogen accumulation inside the cup, and to observe the hydrogen diffusion path around the cup. The results reveal that hydrogen accumulation inside a carbon steelcup raises the possibility of a self-moderating pressure design. The experimental plateau pressure is approximately 70 kPa, and the attainment of steady state is approximately 700 hours. Moreover, simulation resultsindicate the hydrogen diffusion path and hydrogen fluxes around the cup. The plateau pressure inside thecupconcurs with the experimental result.
