Benefits of Minimised Wastage in Construction Sites: A Gauteng Province Case Study

The construction industry is notorious for its large production of waste and large consumption of energy and natural resources. This has led to tight regulations and a conscious effort by government to make the environment better has led to the construction industry to battle with the scourge of wastage. The causes of this waste stems from design, procurement and amongst other processes involved with the construction project. This study aim to seek the benefits of minimised wastage in construction sites using South Africa as a case study. The data used for this research was from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary sources was from detailed review of related literature. The primary data was gathered through a questionnaire, which was distributed to both registered and non-registered professionals. The statistical approach used for this study was the mean item score, which ranks the questions according to the level of agreement of the respondents. This study revealed that clean and safe environment, avoiding cost over-runs are one of the many benefits of minimising wastage in construction sites. Further discussed was the implications of findings that revealed that the South African construction industry is environmentally driven to better their environment and constant argument on who to bore the cost will be reduced as one of the benefits of minimised wastage in construction sites.
