Many curtain walls and cladding systems built during the 1950s through 1970s were anchored to structural elements with carbon steel fasteners. In this era, the steel fasteners may have been installed with minimal corrosion protection and may lack heavy galvanizing or other types of protective coatings that are common in newer curtain walls. Professionals evaluating existing claddings need to be aware that systems that visually appear to be performing well may in fact have concealed support anchors that have significant corrosion or damage. This paper presents four case studies that demonstrate the effects of corrosion on hidden fasteners.
