This paper introduces the MQTT publish-subscribe protocol as a suitable transport mechanism to support next generation Distributed Energy Resource (DER) applications. DER applications such as Automated Demand Response (ADR) systems will be integral to the stability of a future grid with increasing non-synchronous penetration. These systems require secure, extensible and low latency communications in order to operate. There are currently no such suitable protocols, thus MQTT is suggested as a suitable transport mechanism. The authors' testbed ADR heating platform is introduced as a suitable platform for further work in this area.
