The rapid uptake of Photovoltaic (PV) units is causing serious voltage quality issues such as voltage rise and unbalance which limit the rating and number of further PV connection. To alleviate these concerns, it is effective to utilize reactive power absorption by PCS. However, if the same control approaches are carried out at many distribution systems, a large amount of reactive power has to be supplied by the upper system in total, meaning that the power factor of synchronous generators in the upper system deteriorates or any other reactive power control equipment are needed. Additionally, it is possible that the absorbed reactive power at around the end of feeder line can be compensated by PCS located near the distribution substation instead of upper system. Hence, voltage maintenance is available without causing significant impact on upper system although the total amount of required reactive power control for PCS may increase.
