A novel reduced-dimension (RD) MUSIC algorithm based on augmented correlation matrix is proposed to estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) and direction of departure (DOD) for the bistatic co-prime multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Firstly, by reference to the difference co-array of receiving array, we construct an augmented receiving correlation matrix which is then utilized for the DOA estimation by one-dimension (1D) MUSIC. Secondly, depending on each estimated DOA, the designed spatial filtering is performed on the original received signal after matched filtering, and then a filtered and augmented transmitting correlation matrix is generated with respect to the difference co-array of transmitting array. Finally, we pick out the paired DOD for each target by using 1D MUSIC. With the use of more consecutive virtual elements in transmitting and receiving difference co-arrays rather than the less physical elements of non-uniform co-prime transmitting and receiving arrays, the proposed algorithm is possessed of increased maximum number of resolvable targets than the conventional ones with uniform MIMO radar. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified through numerical simulations.
