To improve the hydrodynamic performance of conventional semisubmersibleplatform (SEMI), the large individual column was dividedinto several small columns, and the hydrodynamic performance of theSEMI with multiple small columns (MSC) was numericallyinvestigated in this paper. For a comparative study, a series of MSCSEMI models together with a conventional SEMI model wereestablished and the displacement of them were kept constant. Detailedparametric studies were carried out in frequency domain to investigatethe influence of column number and column diameter on structuralhydrodynamic performance of MSC SEMI. The numerical resultsindicated that the concept of multiple small columns can not onlyweaken the hydrodynamic load on structure but also improve structuralhydrodynamic performance significantly as expected.
