Ground-based remote sensing instruments such as ceilometers, sodars, lidars, radar wind profilers, and microwave radiometers can provide continuous measurements of lower-atmospheric conditions for use in air quality applications. To ensure that the instruments provide reliable, high-quality data in the most cost-effective manner, instrument data attributes and many elements of installation, operation, and data processing must be addressed. Careful consideration of these elements will improve instrument selection and other decision-making about which upper-air instruments will best meet monitoring goals.
