The use of bio-based and renewable Microfibrillated Cellulose (MFC) offers a wide variety of benefits for the production of many paper grades. Direct application of MFC to the sheet surface can greatly enhance the surface properties and provide a superior surface for coating applications. A special applicator that can be positioned on the fourdrinier has been developed for this application. Diluted MFC is forced out of a narrow slot in the applicator and falls as a full-width curtain onto the wet stock. Pilot machine trials of this technology, on both brown packaging grades and white paper grades, have shown improvements in tensile strength, SCT, sheet smoothness, porosity, ink absorbency, and other properties.
