In this paper, an iterative receiver involving decoding, channel estimation and MIMO detection is proposed for underwater acoustic MIMO-OFDM communication systems. First, the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the iterative receiver for underwater acoustic 2IMO-OFDM and 4IMO-OFDM communication systems using the Kauai Acomms MURI 2011 (KAM11) experiment data sets under different system parameters including transmitted positions, the numbers of the combined hydrophones and co-channel interference is analyzed. Moreover, 3-dimensional (3-D) extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis is applied to evaluate the convergence behavior of the iterative receiver using the real data. It helps to explain the impact of these parameters in a highly inhomogeneous underwater environment. The agreement between the EXIT chart analysis and the experimental results provided guidance for the design of system parameters without extensive performance simulations or experimental data processing, which are beneficial to achieve a good efficiencyperformance tradeoff.
