In this paper, a simple control law is proposed for controlling the speed of switched reluctance motor. In the low speeds region, the phase currents are controlled by chopping. PI controller generates the reference current which is used for current chopping. Turn-on angle is fixed and turn-off angle is made to decrease with increase in speed. In the high speeds region, angle control mode is used where turn-on angles are generated using another PI controller instead of conventional lookup table approach. Turn-off angles are controlled by a generalized equation for both low and high-speed regions. This new control law is easy to implement, reduces complexity, saves time and efforts required for computation of angles as compared to look up table approach. Extensive simulations are carried out to compare the performance of motor with the conventional and proposed methods. It is found that the turn-on, turn-off angles and rms phase current obtained from both the methods vary with negligible difference. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the dynamic response of the drive.
