Massive or Full-Dimension MIMO antennas are promising for application in the next-generation mobile devices such as the smartphone for the fifth-generation (5G) communications to achieve multi-Gbps throughput. It has been recently demonstrated that with 12 antennas embedded in the limited space in the smartphone, 3.8-Gbps throughput can be obtained for 12 × 8 MIMO operation with 100-MHz bandwidth and 256-QAM modulation. A new MIMO OTA testbed has been developed for the MIMO system performance verification. Details of the MIMO theory and the promising MIMO antennas for the smartphone will be addressed. Results of the multi-Gbps Massive MIMO in typical indoor and outdoor propagation scenarios will also be presented and its potential applications for 5G communications will be discussed.
