Optical fiber line monitoring using a handheld line information reader in optical communications

The objective of this study is to propose a compact and highly accurate fiber line monitoring system for inspection in optical communications. We developed the handheld line information reader and generator. The developed line information reader consists of a micro controller unit, communication module, display panel, photo diode, transimpedance amplifier, and a voltage amplifier. The line information generator consists of micro controller unit, laser driving circuits, laser diode, and a communication module. The proposed system can detect optical radiations resulting from external bending of optical fiber. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the line reader was increased by 6dB, by adding a focusing lens. Simulation results illustrate the relation between optical radiation field, wavelength, and curvature. Consequently, the developed devices can be considered as an effective method to inspect optical communication lines for radiation leakage.
