To study the key technical issues involved in the field of reconstruction of improvisedexplosive devices (IEDs), the formation mechanism of natural fragmentation under blastloading was investigated using the finite element code AUTODYN 3D with Mott’sstochastic failure model. The analysis of structural response, critical failure condition, aswell as dispersion characteristics including initial angle and velocity of fragments were alsocarried out. Meanwhile, the effects of charge mass and structure were discussed. The resultsof the mass and number of fragments, as well as the radius of flight can be used toreconstruct the explosion scene of IEDs.
