Since the introduction of microtunneling into the North American market there have been numerous projects completed. These projects have ranged in their measure of success, providing lessons learned, both good and bad. In some cases, the lessons learned were incorporated into specifications, forgotten to history, the person with the experience has since left, the microtunneling equipment has changed in that most of the equipment is more versatile than the original equipment, and support equipment has changed allowing for different operating parameters in some cases. In some cases, the operators became familiar with the ground in their location and how to operate in that ground. The new operators may be familiar with operating under these known conditions but may not have the knowledge of how these machines operate allowing them to adjust the microtunneling machine and to operate under new or unexpected conditions.
