Effects of Fractionation on System Security in Space Systems

System security is usually described in terms of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information. When satellite systems are used to collect and transfer information, their security level should be considered as part of the overall system security. In the last decade, the fractionated satellite architecture concept has been shown to have beneficial effects on many system characteristics, such as flexibility, adaptability, and responsiveness. This paper tries to understand whether this architectural concept has also inherent benefits to system security, and whether specific fractionated architectural patterns are more beneficial than others.
