Licensors, process and corrosion engineers typically select between a single and multiple water injection points when designing the reactor effluent air cooler (REAC) water wash systems in refinery hydroprocessing units. Water injection is conventionally modeled with process simulators, using unit operations that implicitly assume instantaneous mixing/equilibrium and perfect distribution. This paper will examine how the extent of wash water vaporization, coupled with non-equilibrium and liquid maldistribution (free water and oil), impact the risk of corrosion. The results provide a rationale for selecting between single and multiple injection points - or both - based on operating conditions and potential localized peak ammonium salt concentrations.
