The intermittence and variability of wind power generation present sustainable challenges for power system's dispatch and steady operation. In the future it may be a main way to install energy storage system (ESS) in the wind farm for integrating high penetration of wind power. And considering about the feasibility and economy, three applications of the ESS are analyzed in this paper, including the mitigation of wind power fluctuations, reduction of the system reserve capacity requirements, and receiving more profits by charging and discharging flexibly based on the peak-valley time of use electricity price. Based on the upper fluctuation rate limit, the grid-connected wind farm power output is determined, and the ESS capacity can be determined based on the frequency spectrum analysis of wind farm power output. Finally, by analyzing the history data of some actual wind farm, the optimal capacities of ESS is determined, and the simulation results prove the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method in this paper.
