The novelty of this study consists in the development of an in-vitro technique for efficient discrimination of lung tissue samples. The design principles of the applied technique, calibration, Figure-of-Merits (FOM)s, experimental results and applied statistics are presented. Specifically, the presented technique relies on the detection and efficient discrimination of angular-resolved diffuse reflectance contributions among healthy tissue (normal), Carcinoma In-Situ (CIS) (pre-carcinoma), and Stage I lung carcinoma, under cross-polarized geometry, by means of first and second-order statistics. The preliminary results of this study can be applied towards the further enhancement of the quality of imaging systems and devices in the areas of digital pathology and imaging of margins.
