Understanding of localised corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of duplex stainless steel (DSS) in atmospheric conditions has significant importance for its use as a safe candidate container material for the storage of intermediate-level radioactive waste (ILW). Some of the UK's storage facilities are close to coastal regions, and ILW-containers are at risk of the deposition of chloride-bearing particulates. These salts become wet at certain relative humidities (RH) and form concentrated thin-film electrolytes, resulting in localised corrosion, or in the presence of tensile stresses, SCC can occur. There is limited data available about the long-term atmospheric corrosion behaviour of DSS under conditions relevant to ILW-container storage.
