In order to better understand and predict the behaviour of accelerated corrosion tests and on-vehicle mobile exposures more time-resolved information is required of the temperature, humidity, and the transition from wet-to-dry for samples exposed. Sensors collecting data of temperature, humidity, sample surface temperature and instantaneous corrosion will be used to analyse the conditions with respect to time during an accelerated corrosion test on steel and zinc of various dimensions, orientations as well as chloride depositions. Data on chloride deposition in mobile exposure corrosion tests will also be collected and analysed using a variety of sensors placed on trucks, with the aim of developing a more accurate and practical method of gathering such data. The data is a crucial factor in understanding and modelling corrosion mechanisms in the road environment, as inferred by data produced during previous mobile exposure tests which show increased corrosion rates during winter months when de-icing salts are used on roads.
