Performance of polyolefin coatings - the relation between polymer structure and coating properties

Corrosion causes high maintenance costs. Several ways of steel conservation are possible each having their own merits. A proper choice of materials is key as the properties in the end application is defined by the choice of the coating materials. Polyolefin Coatings (PE, PP) has been on the market for more than 50 years. . Not all expectations set are always met. Guidelines and the relation of molecular structure and mechanical properties in order to engineer tailored materials that could serve the needs has been subject of many research studies in the past. Poryisobutylene (PIB) based coatings are newly developed based on a well understood relation between chemical polymer structure and properties relevant for long life-time trouble-free protection against corrosion of pipelines and fittings. The research results and the technology (know-how and know-why) will be presented. The relation of molecular structure and properties of PIB based coating will be explained from a chemical, engineering and corrosion protection point of view. The polymer chemical structure of PIB is responsible for the coating to apply directly to steel quick and easy with no health hazards and to be environmentally safe. Several examples will be presented to show the relation between structure and performance of PIB based coatings in various environmental (harsh) conditions.
