Adaptive Workspace to Reduce Analyst Information Overload

Unstructured open source data is ubiquitous and growing at exponential rates, far surpassing the growth of traditional structured (e.g. relational) data sources. This includes multi-lingual and multi-modal (e.g. video, audio, imagery) sources that have the potential to be exploited, whether it's to evaluate nuclear capabilities of a rogue nation, or to evaluate the likelihood of a company going public. However, the ability to exploit this information explosion has not kept pace. Current analysis tools still put the burden on the analyst to identify relevant data while serving more like information management systems instead of true cognitive contributors to the analysis process. This paper addresses the development of a system referred to as the Adaptive Data Immersion ENvironment (ADIEN), whose goal is to provide a true bi-directional human-IT partnership that includes flexible, adaptive processes like data reduction, 'what-if analysis' and other creative human activities that require 'thinking outside the box.
