The shifting demand in paper grades results in overcapacities in the market segment of graphic papers. One solution to meet these new market requirements is the conversion of graphic paper machines to packaging grades. To overcome the time constraints, cost pressure and the uncertainty of a new market as well as the high risk for such an investment, Voith's (vendor's) approach in a very early stage of the project is a detailed pre-engineering. Pre-engineering studies are comprehensive and encompass the paper machine and stock preparation unit as the core delivery, as well as the recommendations for all auxiliary systems such as automation, vacuum system, fresh and waste water systems, starch process, energy supply and civil works etc. Therefore maximum technological and financial planning security is provided for implementation of investments within the framework of the overall budget and within the timeline of the project. In our case study, Parenco and its shareholder H2 equity partners used the pre-engineering as a preparation for a comprehensive rebuild of the stock preparation and paper machine, as well as facility renovation. The project contains a process line package, extending the core scope to the surrounding environment. With this setup, the customer has just one partner and far fewer interfaces to liaise with, ensuring fast project turnaround and cost accuracy. For achieving the targeted excellent quality parameters for packaging and medium grades, Voith's (vendor's) scope of supply comprised of a new two-layer headbox, a rebuild of the former/ press section, a new sizing unit, including the necessary dryer section upgrades and optimization. This leads to an optimized paper making process as well as economic and ecological improvement through energy reduction and lower water consumption. With only 14 months lead time, a 9.0 m (355 inch) newsprint machine will be converted into a competitive packaging machine.
