A System Thinking Analysis Approach for Construction Workplace Safety in China: An Example of a Simulation Model at a Site

Accidents, injuries, fatalities in construction workplace are important research issues in China. Construction safety management system (CSMS) is based upon related laws and regulations. CSMS is a complicated system which has various influencing factors. In order to have a more comprehensive understanding on safety issues, we need to bring up system thinking. In the present study, we developed a system dynamics model to deal with kinds of factors and simulate the change. There are many qualitative variables in CSMS factors which need be transform to quantitative numbers. We presented an approach which comprises how to extract the effective factors, variables transform, and the circulating model building process. Through a preliminary example model of construction safety site, we made up three subsystem to find the relation among accident rate and other factors. The simulation result showed the relation of accident rate and supervision, personal feeling, fatigue to verify the approach validity.
