As technology increases, the number of unmanned autonomous systems (UAS) that have been purchased and are being used in the United States has increased dramatically. Construction has been a part of this larger trend, and UAS are being incorporated into construction activities in a variety of ways. Construction applications for UAS include documentation of construction progress through photos and video, documentation of milestone activities (e.g., large crane lifts), inspection of constructed facilities, measurements, as well as for inventory and security purposes. This paper documents the use of UAS in the construction industry based on the results of a survey of construction industry professionals and identifies opportunities and challenges for future use.
