Statistics showed frequent contract changes in car depot engineering projects, which resulted in huge budget overrun and extended duration. Estimating the impact of contract changes, which usually takes a considerable amount of time, is the key step for contract change management. The adoption of building information modeling (BIM) can facilitate the estimation process. Firstly, using quantity take-off from BIM, engineers and contractors can calculate the changed parts in construction more quickly and efficiently. Secondly, BIM can help determine changes that have greatest impact on follow-up activities. This paper demonstrates the use of BIM in car depot engineering projects. An algorithm was developed to extract network diagram from BIM models. The impact of contract changes on follow-up activities was calculated using a rule-based engine. The proposed framework was tested on a case of car depot engineering project from Guangzhou Metro Group.
