The earth retaining wall system generically referred to as Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls (MSE Walls) have increased in use since their conception to the point that they are now the most common type of reinforced soil wall system for retaining applications. The system originally created in France in 1963 by the engineer/architect, Henry Vidal has been globally and successfully utilized for more of 50 years. Many variations to the original design have been incorporated during this time, both by the inventor's original company, and also by many other similar systems. The focus of this paper is the behaviour and the design aspects that should be paid special attention during the connection design process. The main conclusion of this paper is that the MSE walls with the proper detailed design are dependable structures with excellent performance.
