1. A decrease in indirect radiation for the eastern U.S. during 1995 - 2013 of 0.6% yr~(-1) can be attributed to decreasing SO_2 emissions. 2. Simple scaling relationships and a full earth system model show that this trend has caused a decrease in gross primary productivity. The results agree within 20%. 3. The decrease in gross primary productivity is modeled to be from 1995-2013. This effect should be considered along with other ecosystem impacts of SO_2 reductions.
