A prototype heat extraction system was designed and installed at a MSW landfill located in region with a temperate climate in California. The heat extraction system consisted of a heat extraction well equipped with closed-loop vertical piping network, a fluid storage tank located at the ground surface, and a pump/generator assembly. A monitoring system also was installed to assess the influence of the heat extraction system on the waste mass. The heat extraction system and monitoring system extended to depths of 23.5 m and 24 m, respectively. The prototype system was operated for a period of approximately 1 year. Turbulent flow conditions were maintained during system operation. Temperature decreases on the order of 5°C were measured at a radial distance 1 m from the heat extraction well along the entire depth of the extraction well. Less influence was observed at greater distances from the heat extraction well. The selected design and installation of the system described herein was effective for extracting appreciable amounts of heat as demonstrated by the preliminary data obtained during early stages of operation of the system.
