This paper presents a novel online line switching method for reducing transmission loss in power systems while satisfying operational and engineering constraints of post-switching power systems. The proposed method achieves the goal of online application by combining linear and nonlinear methods to balance speed and accuracy. A three-stage strategy including screening stage, ranking stage and detailed analysis stage is employed in the proposed method to find fast and optimal solutions. The proposed method can identify the globally optimal solution and a set of high-quality solutions for single-line switching and multiple-line switching, respectively. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method is validated on the IEEE 118-bus and a 1354-bus power system with very promising results.
